Does the GNU Social code even have SMS support in the first place?

From what I can tell "...supports a cheap-and-dirty system for sending update
messages to mobile phones and for receiving updates from the mobile.
***Instead of sending through the SMS network itself, which is costly and
requires buy-in from the wireless carriers, it simply piggybacks on the email
gateways that many carriers provide to their customers. So, SMS configuration
is essentially email configuration.***"

So; it seems that it doesn't talk directly to the carrier networks. Because
that's expensive. And you need to get their support.

Does your cell phone carrier provide "email-to-SMS"? Your cell phone carrier
should be able to tell you if they do, and what your phone's email address is
if they do. Messages sent to that address are then converted (by your cell
phone carrier) into an SMS.

So, from GNU Social's perspective, it's "just another email address."
