RAM is a factor for sure. It's just not direct. More RAM basically means that  
you can do more stuff at once without either having programs crash or using  
swap (depending on whether swap is set up). So it's very important. But more  
RAM doesn't make anything faster per se.

So for example, if a game doesn't run well, adding more RAM isn't going to  
help with that (games are almost never big eaters of RAM). But if you keep  
running out of RAM and having to constrict yourself to one tab or use a  
lightweight DE, more RAM will help with that.
